HOW TO MAKE NATURAL MINTY MOUTHWASH AT HOME

Homemade mouth wash

"Oral microbiome is crucial to health as it can cause both oral and systemic diseases" - NIH

Did you know that your gut and mouth microbiome resemble each other. You can support not just your health but also cavities, gingivitis and more by some simple daily and weekly habits.

One of those habits you might have started is swishing with mouthwash.

And believe it or not, mouthwashes have been around for a very long time. Not only did Hippocrates recommend making a combination of vinegar, alum, and salt to stop bad breath, Native Americans also used plants, such as three leaf golden thread, soaked in water as a mouth rinse to stop infections.

Today there are more than 112 types of mouthwash brands that exist, but many store-bought brands are filled with potentially harmful ingredients like thymol, which is known to be dangerous to the environment as well as to aquatic organisms, and hexetidine, considered to be carcinogenic. Even fluoride has its cons with habitual use.

With that said, I’m sharing my easy at home mouth wash recipe, to avoid toxins, and for you to enjoy with your whole family!

Home-made Mouthwash

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of filtered water

  • 3 teaspoons of baking soda

  • 4 drops of tea tree essential oil

  • 4 drops of peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add all ingredients to a mason jar or similar container with a lid.

  • Shake very well.

  • Use about 2 tablespoons of this mixture each day

*Note: The baking soda will usually settle to the bottom of the container after a few hours, this is normal. Simply shake well before each use.

    • As with any mouthwash, gargle and spit, don’t swallow!

 Happy swishing & health mouth!
